Data & Strategy:
An introduction to social mobility: What it is and why it's important

London is one of the most diverse cities in the world, yet many people face significant barriers to getting a job or progressing their careers because of their background. Those from lower socio-economic backgrounds remain more likely to be unemployed, find it harder to get a ‘good’ job, and get paid less than their better-off peers. This seminar will raise awareness of the issues by exploring social mobility from a range of perspectives. It will give you an opportunity to hear from academics, organisations, and businesses as well as individual perspectives to understand what it means and why it is important. As we face the social and economic impact of Covid-19 social mobility is more important than ever. The session will address the challenges and opportunities of social mobility and why it needs to be priority for businesses. This seminar features:

  • (Chair) Sarah Atkinson, Chief Executive Officer, Social Mobility Foundation
  • Dr Sam Friedman Associate Professor, London School of Economics and Political Science
  • Joanna Abeyie OBE, Founder and CEO, Blue Moon
  • Chris Cummings Chief Executive, The Investment Association
  • Hollie Crompton Social Mobility Lead, PwC
